On a cross patee sable betweem four roses 2 in chief gules and 2 in base white at fess point another white rose

In about 133 King Henry I made prior Athewode the first Bishop of Carlisle. The cross represents the cross of Carlisle priory, and shows that the City of Carlisle is the centre of the Diocese. In the county bade the two top roses are the roses of Lancaster and the bottom ones the roses of York. In the original arms, however, the five roses were all red and white (Tudor). They are sometimes said to be those of the Virgin Mary, to whom Carlisle Cathedral is dedicated.
